How to add fractions with unlike denomitators

Mr.Isfeld is making a salad dressing using 1/2 cup olive oil and 1/3 cup vinegar. He pours them both into a jar. In total how many cups of dressing does he have?

1. First find the LCM (Lowest Common Multiple) of 2 and 3.

2- 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
3- 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 Our LCM is 6!

2. now for the tricky part..
we have to use our mental math skills :D

3. Deal with fractions.
3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6

4. Deal with wholes.
we don't need to do this step because there's no wholes.

so our answer is 5/6 . and it is in lowest terms.
